About Regional Natural Park Arrierito Antioqueño

Regional Natural Park Arrierito Antioqueño is located on the western slopes of the Central Andes in the municipality of San Luis, Antioquia, Colombia. Established to protect the fragile cloud forest habitat and the endemic and endangered hummingbird species, the Antioqueño Arrierito (Coeligena orina), it comprises a lush montane forest ecosystem characterized by abundant mosses, epiphytes, and endemic flora and fauna. The park stretches across a rugged mountainous terrain with elevations ranging approximately between 1,800 and 2,500 meters above sea level. It plays a vital role in watershed protection and preserving biodiversity within the northern Andes, one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots. Visitors to the park can explore well-maintained trails that lead through pristine forests with impressive birdwatching opportunities, including sightings of the rare Arrierito hummingbird, various tanagers, and other high-Andean birds. Key landmarks include viewpoints with dramatic vistas of the surrounding cloud forest valleys and the nearby mountains of Antioquia. The park also serves as an important research site for ornithologists and conservationists focused on neotropical species preservation. Visitor infrastructure is modest, emphasizing conservation and low-impact recreation. The park’s appeal lies in its unique combination of endemic wildlife, serene natural landscapes, and the cultural heritage of the local communities that steward this natural treasure. It attracts nature enthusiasts, especially birders, conservationists, and hikers looking to experience remote, biodiverse montane forest typical of the Colombian Andes.
